HELP—I’m Stuck On The Toilet!

Why do older, aging adults wind up in homes and assisted living facilities? Well it’s right there in the title of this blog, and it might sound ignorant, but it’s that simple; getting off the toilet

But taking a broader look, as people age, they end up in assisted care facilities because they’ve lost their ability to be independent. During life we become less active and our reasons to get out of the house dwindle, so people have a tendency to sit around, not be active, and let their muscles atrophy and lose range of motion.

Finding an exercise routine that works for us is so important in warding off those problems, not just for us, but for our children who will be forced to take care of us or shove us in a home.

We’re talking about functional everyday movements. Want to know what a burpee resembles? Falling down to the ground and being able to get back up on your own. Sitting on the toilet seat? That’s an air squat. Carrying in all the groceries from your car in one shot? That’s a farmers carry.

Age is literally just a number and a good coach can guide someone on the correct path with relative intensity, while range of motion and movement goals stay the same.

In a previous blog we talked about strength training and its value with increasing our metabolism. Well, strength training also plays a critical role in preventing and reversing osteoporosis. What happens if you slip on the bathroom floor and your bone breaks from being too brittle? That can be devastating and even further reduce range of motion even after rehab, while complicating life. So, grab those weights, and start building that bone density.

Online Personal Training is appropriate for people of all ages, shapes and sizes.. At Bridge The Gap, we have several older  athletes, and they have had tremendous success.

Listen, I’m not an elite athlete.  I’m not going to win any medals or be put in any record books, unless it’s a typo.  Sure I can joke about it, but honestly I work out everyday, to stay out of a nursing home when I am older and to make sure I have the energy to keep up with my amazing daughter and all her antics – O, and because I never want to be that guy that’s stuck on the toilet. Yikes
